Bed Related Discussion

I'm finding it so hard to get up in the morning right now! It's the cold. I need a heater in my bedroom  with a timer on it so it heats the room up just before my alarm goes off. Is there such a heater? it seems like such a grownup/dull thing to buy. I hate buying stuff like that.

After dragging myself out of bed in sub zero (felt like it) temperatures, getting to work late, and doing a girl girl shoot, I went on the hunt for some cute pajamas!
While it would be lovely if they were for me, they were actually for the massive pillow fighting  shoot we have on Friday... creatively titled "Pillow Fight Girls".
I know, I know... it sounds cheesy, but trust me, it'll be good. I'm really excited about it, we have some rad lighting gear sorted, three stunning models, cute outfits and a shit load of feathers. It will also mark the return of one of my favorite models, Julietta. The below picture of Julietta was taken last year after the AVN awards, in Vegas, and she'll hate me for putting it up.

Its gonna be good!

Back to Business

Shooting for Abbywinters, I have to stick to a strict paradigm. Its kinda fun trying to work my own style into that mould, it also opens me up to take more risks, the fact i can blame it on "a work thing" if it stuffs up, is kinda refreshing too.

For todays shoot I had a really somber, dark vision (more me than AW really). There was a good location, a bit grotty, the model was young and thin. I really wanted to drag an old mattress into the room for extra grot... ha! The model however, wasn't feeling my mood. So we ended up doing something lighter. Her long blonde hair looked great when she flicked it, during the frivolity she ran around the small room and the results were pretty cool. I doubt they'll be included in the edit, they're too different to edit into an actual set, but i thought i would take them home and pop a few up here.

Opaline

Its been a pretty slim week for shoots, plus since we now have three photographers I have to let other people do some shoots too (heehee). One shoot I enjoyed recently was shot on Thursday with the model, Opaline. I cant actually remember where she was from but she had incredible blue eyes.

The wedding went well, as soon as I get some pictures to the happy couple I'll post a couple here. Perth was great fun, hanging out with my buddy got a little messy and a little lame since we ended up at a gothic house party, but thats Perth for you!

Working Out = Hot

I'm off to Perth tomorrow! I figured it would be a good chance to get some sun and wear a pretty dress but apparently its cold over there and I don't have enough cash to buy the pretty dress i was after. So I'm having a sook.
Today I edited a shoot called "Workout Girls" (are you noticing a pattern?) While its not my absolute favorite concept for a shoot, the lighting was nice and we got some good shots, one of which (the model is Magdeline) is below.

When I first decided to start this blog I knew I wanted to post this picture, but I totally forgot about it until I saw it today. I just really like the light, it is one of the first things I notice when go overseas. The first time I went to LA I was quite surprised at the quality of the light. I had never considered that light may change from country to country. In LA the light looks exactly like it does in the movies (ha!) Its soft, hazy and pollution affected, but lovely and whimsical and makes just about every picture you take look like you took it in the 70's on your way to a key party where you may get murdered by the Manson family. This picture however was taken at about 6 in the morning from a hotel room in Las Vegas.

Staying Up Late

I've always been a bit of a night owl, its a blessing that I don't have to be at work until 10. Except that on weekends a "sleep in" usually means I wind up sleeping in until 12, Then get all pissy at myself for wasting the weekend and missing the markets. Hmph. This weekend was no exception, I even had a nap this afternoon.
Tonight I'm sitting up watching "The Cell" I have seen it about a billion times but everytime the late movie turns out to be a horror its a great excuse to stay up and enjoy my lounge suite.

I got a new computer and was looking through all the stuff to change over from my old one, and i found this picture from Orchard Girls, a shoot I did a few weeks back.
I really dig the look and lighting in this shoot, as far as viewing it as a set goes its not as consistent as I would like, plus the day was hard work. The lighting was full sun behind the girls and about 3 giant mirrors on stands pumping sunlight back into the front. The day was patchy and cloudy though, which looks great in the background (like in this shot) but it meant there was lots of stopping and starting. The whole shoot took about 2 1/2 hours, which is LONG for the models to keep the action up. Looking back on the edit it pulls together well, but the shoot day was a nightmare. Waiting for the weather then yelling "Go!" then "Ok, lets wait..." gah! just thinking of it makes me want to pull my hair out! I think the models all wanted to punch me at the end of the day.

Tomorrow its back to work, no big shoots this week and i have to go to Perth on Thursday, I am really looking forward to it, its only for a couple of days but I get to see my Mum & Dad and catch up with my best bud, who is back from a jaunt in the states...

A Long Week...

Friday, my friend.

This week: BMX shoot was fantastic, plus it had two of my all-time-favorite models in it. We had plenty of time to go check out the location (a bit of a luxury for AW shoots) and were able to step out a few shots, we were also blessed with good weather. The costumes were adorable too, Noelle and Kristal were in puffer vests, knee and elbow guards were worn by all the girls, vintage adidas shorts, sports singlets, it was very ET (ha!). I really get into the costuming side of things, on the solo shoots its not so important, the girls just wear their own stuff but on multi girl shoots there is usually a theme to follow, I get really anal about making sure its all perfect, I doubt the little details in themselves are noticed, but I'm sure the overall feel of the shoot is much better for it.
One light I totally under use, and I'm surprised I don't drag out everyday is the para. Its just one of those lights that "make" the shoot. We set up a generator and did a few feature shots with it and it just blows me away, I'm in the process of coming up with a few para specific shoot ideas, so expect to see more of it.

I was so happy to finish up this week. I must have been mad to commit to hanging with a friend this evening to take more photos! It was a good excuse for some like minds to get together and bounce ideas around. We played with some long exposure stuff and tried out each others gear. We got some cool shots, next time - sand, helpers and a tripod.

I also went and checked out this exhibition at CCP (Centre for Contempory Photography) some of the images blew my mind, especially Briony Ridley's "Cyclone Isobel" image. Its pretty arresting, and is being used for much of the promo for the exhibition. I stood there and stared at it for ages, it has such an air of anticipation. I went to her site and checked out some of the other work and really dug it. Go Melbourne.

This weekend i'm going to get out from behind the camera, sleep in, pay some bills, sleep in, buy a softbox for an on camera flash for a wedding I'm shooting next week, sleep in.

Fields

This girls is amazing!
Apart from the fact she is a blinker (agh!) she does not take a bad picture... plus she is a pleasure to spend the day with. Kristal and I drove about 2 hours to get to a sufficiently abandoned field. I had this technique I'd wanted to try for ages in my head, but I underestimated how touchy the master/slave system on the Canon 580EX flashs were, it was a bit of a pain, not good for shooting fast or in much quantity. Next time I do this i'll get my shit together with the Pocket Wizards, way easier i'd imagine, those things are the shit.

Natural Light and Trips OS

Today I shot a model who was traveling Australia from Canada. She was telling me about all these amazing places she has visited around the world, it really made me get itchy(er) feet. I'm supposed to be going to Japan in a month or so, but that's just going to be a couple-of-week thing. I'd like to travel around alone and just hang out, take some time see some different things, I'm not talking any "spiritual journey to India" kinda thing, just spending some time alone exploring. A good friend of mine has done it a few times now and her tales make me turn green. Canada sounded pretty good, once I got passed the idea of bears. So does Cuba and Puerto Rico.

The shoot today was good, but the lighting set up was a bit bland, I'm getting bored with the same old techniques. I'm trying to learn a different way of lighting, the way Corrine Day lights blows my mind, it looks so natural (I'm only guessing it isn't) I have been experimenting but I still have a long way to go, I tried today but it wasn't working. I've been told its like painting with light, so I'm looking forward to picking some stuff up from a photographer/teacher friend of mine.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow, I'm shooting model Krystal (who is stunning!) in a style I have been thinking of for a while, a field, wind, rain... of course this may all change tomorrow when the sun is shining(blah!). Although my last shoot with Krystal went well, I shot her on an overcast day at sunset, it made for some stunning light. (below)

This shoot was killer, no flash heads, just a bunch of red heads and the HMI. Fun times.

Golden Plains 2008

I took a bunch of pictures for Mess+Noise at the recent Golden Plains Music Festival, I love festivals, especially GP. There is just something about the sweaty, dirty, dusty, hot festival that makes for some amazing pictures. This one wasn't quite dusty enough to fuck with my white balance (bummer, there was grass!) but I still got some neat shots.

Editing Day

Today was editing day! Shooting so much, its often a couple of weeks until I get time to go through the shoots and edit them. On a day (like today) where the models cancel, or video only stuff is scheduled I really look forward to checking them out again.

One that stood out today was Kiki & Indiana, anyone looking for some intense, creative girl on girl action should not miss this shoot. It was a surprise, Kiki is incredibly quiet, and a the start of the day we were having our doubts that the shoot should go ahead, the pairing just wasn't looking right, We had a feeling Kiki might be a dark horse and it turns out we were right, she was amazing. She totally took control and gave me some amazing angles to shoot.

Kiki&Indiana.jpg
The light was an interesting setup too, at the location the bathtub was nearly too good to believe, outside, aussie, corrugated iron, stunning mountain views and it worked! It was a blue sky sunny day and there was sunlight blearing in, but the shed/bathroom was positioned in such a way that with the help of a scrim we could use totally natural light and get a great result. The combination of great models, great location and great light, certainly a favorite girl girl shoot.
